Living Older, Living Better in Your 80s!
If you are in your 80s, you have probably developed a philosophical perspective on most things. You know who
you are, and have known for a long time. You no longer spend time trying to find yourself: instead, perhaps, you
are spending time trying to find your glasses!
At 80, maintaining your social circle is very important. You may have to go to an extra effort to have social
activities, but it is worth it for your mental and physical health.
You may find, as a patient of mine told me, that "a lot of things hurt, and the things that don't hurt, don't work!"
This can lead you to spend a lot of time at the doctor's office. But remember, you are in charge of your health,
and your doctor is simply one of your partners in staying healthy! Your doctor is there to diagnose and treat
illnesses: you have many other needs such as companionship, staying mentally sharp, being entertained and
amused, and getting exercise that your doctor won't be able to provide. Fortunately, you have what it takes to go
out and get it!
Never hesitate to ask for help when you need it. There are many resources available to you--use them. You
worked hard for others your whole life, and its ok to take back.
Let me know what you think is important about being in your 80's, and any links that you recommend, by sending
me your comments!
