Relationships
from Living Older, Living Better! by Katrina Gwinn, MD
No One is an Island

We are all social creatures.  We need and are needed by others.  Scientifically, this can be understood by
considering that as primates, we live in social groups and depend on each other by nature.  The
establishment of community and culture, and consequently emotional ties and altruistic behavior, has
helped us survive.  Spiritually and philosophically, people are not isolated from each other but are
connected through common experiences and the lifelong seeking of meaningful lives.
